MICROSOFT

During the Build 2024 keynote, Microsoft announced deeper AI integration into Windows, highlighting the expansion of Microsoft Copilot with autonomous agents and new AI clipboard features.

Microsoft’s Copilot AI agents will soon function like virtual employees, handling tasks such as email monitoring, automated workflows, employee onboarding, and data entry.

These agents aim to take care of tedious tasks without replacing jobs.

The new abilities will be previewed in Copilot Studio later this year.

Microsoft also introduced Phi-3-vision, a compact multimodal AI model for text and image analysis, designed for mobile devices.

This model is part of the Phi-3 family and is available in preview.

The Microsoft Edge browser will soon include AI-powered real-time video translation, allowing users to translate videos on platforms like YouTube and LinkedIn.

Initial languages include Spanish, English, German, Hindi, Italian, and Russian, with more to follow.

Additionally, Microsoft Teams will soon allow custom emojis, similar to Slack. This is coming in July.

Another noteworthy development is the Advanced Paste feature in PowerToys for Windows 11, enabling users to convert clipboard content into different formats like plaintext, markdown, or JSON.

This feature requires an OpenAI API key for AI functionalities.

Here’s what you should know:

  • Copilot AI agents: Automate routine tasks like email monitoring and data entry.

  • Phi-3-vision: Compact AI model for text and image analysis, available on mobile.

  • Edge video translation: Real-time translations for videos on major platforms.

  • Custom emojis in Teams: Personalised emojis for internal organisational use.

  • Advanced Paste in PowerToys: Convert clipboard content to various formats.

The makeover of the century

Finally, Microsoft unveiled Qualcomm’s $899 Snapdragon Dev Kit for Windows, featuring a Snapdragon X Elite chip, 32GB RAM, and a 512GB SSD.

File Explorer will also integrate Git for tracking coding projects and natively support 7-zip and TAR compression.

These updates mark significant steps in making AI more accessible and integrated into daily tasks, enhancing productivity and user experience.

Clippy the paperclip is starting to like the ancient ancestor of computing assistants.

GOOGLE ADS

Google has recently introduced AI-generated summaries in search results and is now testing ads within these summaries.

This new feature is being trialled in the US for both search and shopping ads.

In a demonstration, Google showed how an AI-generated response to "How do I get wrinkles out of clothes?" now includes a sponsored section displaying wrinkle sprays from retailers like Walmart and Instacart.

What these updates include:

  • AI-generated search summaries will now include relevant ads.

  • Advertisers with existing Google campaigns can appear in these summaries.

  • Testing and feedback will shape future implementations.

The future of research

Google plans to show ads in AI summaries when they are relevant to the user's query and the AI-generated content.

Advertisers running certain campaigns with Google will automatically qualify to appear in these AI summaries.

Google will continue testing and refining this feature, seeking feedback from advertisers and the industry.

However, there's concern that this may clutter the search experience rather than provide a streamlined summary.

I guess it was just a matter of time…
