MICROSOFT VS OPENAI
Microsoft’s relationship with OpenAI has become a bit more complex.
Recently, Microsoft included OpenAI in its annual report as a competitor, alongside tech giants like Amazon, Apple, Google and Meta.
Despite being OpenAI’s biggest investor, with a massive $13B investment, Microsoft sees OpenAI as a rival in AI services and search advertising.
The partners between Microsoft and OpenAI have always been significant, with Microsoft serving as OpenAI’s exclusive cloud provider and integrating its AI models like Microsoft products.
But, OpenAI’s recent unveiling of a search engine prototype, SearchGPT, has intensified the competitive edge between the two.
Here’s what we know:
Microsft now views OpenAI as a competitor, despite their partnership and investment.
OpenAI launched SearchGPT, directly challenging Microsoft’s position in search advertising.
Microsoft offers its own AI chatbot, Copilot, through Bing and Windows, as an alternative to ChatGPT.
Potential frenemies?
While some companies pay OpenaI directly for its AI models, others go through Microsoft’s Azure OpenAI service.
An OpenAI spokesperson stated that their competitive dynamic was always part of the plan and that Microsoft remains a valuable partner.
The relationship has faced its share of drama this year.
Microsoft’s CEO, Satya Nadella, was reportedly out of the loop when OpenAI’s board temporarily removed its CEO, Sam Altman in November.
After Altman was reinstated, Microsoft was given a non-voting seat on OpenAI’s board, which it recently gave up.
Adding to the intrigue, Nadella recruited Mustafa Suleyman, a co-founder of DeepMind and Inflection to AI, to lead a new Microsoft AI unit, further showing Microsoft’s dedication to AI development.
Nadella and Altman maintain a close relationship, with Nadella noting that Altman frequently pushes for more collaboration and resources.

Mystery Link…
AI MUSIC
Suno, an AI music generation startup, has admitted to using copyrighted songs to train its AI model.
This revelation comes in the wake of a lawsuit filed by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) against Suno and another startup, Udio.
The RIAA claims that both companies trained their models using copyrighted music without permission, sparking questions about whether this falls under the fair use doctrine.
In a recent court filing, Suno acknowledged that it did indeed use copyrighted music, asserting that this practice is legal under fair use.
Mikey Shulman, Suno’s CEO, defended their approach in a blog post, saying they used music found on the “open internet”, much like a young musician learns by listening to different genres.
Shulman insisted, “Learning is not infringing. It never has been, and it is not now”
Here’s what happened:
Suno trained its AI model using copyrighted songs, claiming it is legal under fair use.
The RIAA argues that this constitutes “industrial-scale infringement”.
The case could set a significant precedent for AI’s future in music.
The RIAA has fired back, accusing Suno of “industrial scale infringement” and arguing that their actions do not qualify as fair use.
They stated, “Their vision of the ‘future of music’ is apparently one in which fans will no longer enjoy music by their favourite artists because those artists can no longer earn a living.”
As the legal battle unfolds, its outcome could establish a significant precedent for the future of AI and music.
Suno users out there, ready to make a diss track about RIAA.
