😮 MICROSOFT TO BE INVESTIGATED OVER OPEN AI
Microsoft is in trouble with the CMA once more.
The Competition and Markets Authority is investigating Microsoft’s investment in OpenAI.
This isn’t Microsoft’s first rodeo with the CMA…
What is the CMA?
The CMA is an independent watchdog that tries to prevent monopolies forming for companies that operate in the U.K.
However, as multinational companies like Microsoft have such a large presence in the U.K, their rulings are essentially global, as Microsoft would be unwilling to withdraw from the UK market, and thus are bound to CMA rulings for their operations.
You gotta play by our rules, Microsoft!

The CMA are examining whether the US tech giant's work with OpenAI could affect the AI market overall.
And that’s just for text applications.
Not Microsoft’s first time…
If this all sounds a bit familiar, it’s because the CMA recently intervened on Microsoft’s purchase of Activision, the biggest purchase of a gaming company in history.
They initially ruled to block the deal, due to cloud gaming.
Microsoft had to agree to sell off Activision’s cloud gaming division to Ubisoft, for the deal to be confirmed.
With a 49% stake in OpenAI, the CMA is concerned Microsoft has too much power here.
The watchdog is questioning whether the partnership has resulted in an "acquisition of control", whether an effective merger has taken place and if this could affect competition in the UK.
Microsoft will be gulping at the idea of another run-in with the CMA…

Apple has very quietly released its AI frameworks.
The frameworks and model libraries are designed to run on its chips and maybe bring generative AI apps to MacBooks.
The company’s machine learning research team released MLX, a machine learning framework where developers can build models that run efficiently on Apple Silicon and deep learning model library MLX Data.

MLX is an efficient machine learning framework specifically designed for Apple silicon (i.e. your laptop!)
