On Thursday morning, OpenAI’s ChatGPT went offline due to a global outage. The company confirmed its text-to-video AI platform, Sora, was also affected.
OpenAI identified the issue and started fixing it, with ChatGPT traffic gradually being restored by region.
At the peak of the outage, 75% of ChatGPT users globally reported problems, according to Downdetector.
Here’s what happened:
ChatGPT and Sora experienced global outages, but recovery is ongoing.
Meta’s platforms, including Facebook and Instagram, also faced disruptions.
Shared systems at Meta mean outages often hit all platforms at the same time.
Meta’s outage happened just hours earlier on Wednesday, affecting Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, and Threads.
The company said it fixed 99% of the issues within an hour, with most services back to normal quickly.
Meta apologised for the inconvenience, explaining that its shared systems mean one issue can impact multiple platforms.
Meta had considered making its apps more connected for users but seems to have dropped the idea due to regulatory challenges.
Both OpenAI and Meta assured users that services are now mostly restored.
Just a gentle reminder we’re one major outage away from disaster.
