🚀 META LAUNCHES LLAMA 2, AND IT’S FREE!

Meta has launched its second-generation Llama language model, and has made it completely open-source and free to use.

Llama 2 was trained on 40% more data than the original model, and can apparently understand double the context length of its predecessor.

Meta’s press release explains the decision to open up Llama as a way to give businesses, startups, and researchers access to more AI tools, allowing for experimentation as a community.

This has seen a mixed reaction, as some are pleased they can use the AI for free and experiment with it, while others have said it’s a cynical move to gather data and warn that it will be used by bad actors for nefarious means.

At the same time, UK Students’ favourite former politician Nick Clegg (Google that one, non-Brits) said he thinks AI is still stupid, as he spoke about the launch.

Meta’s #2 said he thinks AI is a long, long way from becoming autonomous and posing any kind of threat to humanity. "In many ways, they're quite stupid," said Sir Nick (yes he’s actually a knight).

A language model is a system designed to generate human language. It uses deep learning to analyse vast amounts of text data, learning the patterns and structures of language. Language models are essential components of various AI applications, enabling things like chatbots and text generators.

Language learning apps are in some ways one of the most ideally suited to AI, with countless integrations coming to mind. The stock market is clearly thinking the same, as language apps are booming.

Preply, a language learning platform connecting people with tutors, has raised $70 million of new capital to ramp up its use of artificial intelligence in its offering. (Although, who wants to pay for an AI tutor?)

Duolingo, meanwhile, has seen its stock DOUBLE this year, as AI promises to improve personalisation. Can you imagine a personal AI tutor who you can actually speak with!? It’s not far off, as voice-generating AI is coming along leaps and bounds, alongside voice recognition AI.

A simple AI chatbot can be an incredibly powerful tool to practice with.

In fact, it’s almost as if anyone who’s accumulated a 300-day streak - before AI made learning 100x more effective - completely wasted their time!
