Meta just slid into Midjourney’s DMs, and it worked
Meta has struck a licensing deal with Midjourney to bring the startup’s AI image and video generation tech into its future products.
Announced by Meta’s Chief AI Officer, Alexandr Wang, the partnership will see the two teams work closely to improve Meta’s upcoming AI models and tools.
The move aims to strengthen Meta’s position against competitors like OpenAI’s Sora, Google’s Veo, and Black Forest Lab’s Flux.
Meta already offers its own image and video generators, Imagine and Movie Gen, but the Midjourney deal signals a bigger push to advance its capabilities.
TL;DR
Meta licenses Midjourney’s tech to enhance future image and video tools.
Midjourney stays independent, generating strong revenue growth.
Both companies face copyright claims, but rulings currently favour AI firms.
When you can’t beat ‘em, collab
Midjourney, founded in 2022, has grown rapidly, earning an estimated $200M in 2023 through subscription plans starting at $10 per month.
The company launched its first video model, V1, in June and remains independent, with no outside investors.
The deal comes as both Meta and Midjourney face copyright lawsuits over AI training data, though recent rulings have largely sided with tech companies.
Midjourney’s about to be Meta’s favourite situationship.
