Meta just left the EU on read over AI rules

Meta has decided not to sign the EU’s new voluntary code of practice for general-purpose AI, calling it a step too far.

Joel Kaplan, Meta’s global affairs chief, says the code brings legal uncertainty and goes beyond what the existing AI Act already covers.

The European Commission rolled out the final version last week, letting companies choose whether to opt in.

It’s meant to support the AI Act, which aims to make AI systems safer and more transparent.

Here’s what you should know:

  • Meta says the code creates legal confusion and goes beyond the AI Act.

  • Other big companies like ASML and Airbus are asking for a delay.

  • OpenAI is going ahead and signing the code, despite industry concerns.

Meta’s legal ick

Meta isn’t alone here. ASML and Airbus have also raised concerns and want the EU to delay the code by two years.

Meanwhile, OpenAI has chosen to sign it.

Kaplan, who recently took over from Nick Clegg, warned that the EU’s approach could slow down AI innovation and make it harder for European businesses to grow in the space.

Imagine being so rich you can ghost the European Commission like a bad Tinder date.
