Plastic was an accident. The first fully synthetic plastic, Bakelite, was invented by mistake in 1907. Basically, they were trying to make something else, and boom—plastic happened. And now turtles hate us.

AI VIDEO

Meta's Movie Gen is their new AI tool that creates videos from text prompts. What’s different about this version?

It generates videos with sound as well, although it can’t do voice, so you’re gonna have to wait for those custom Hollywood movies.

Like other companies such as Runway and OpenAI, Meta is heavily investing in this area of generative AI.

While not available to the public, Movie Gen showcases Meta's efforts to turn simple text instructions into relatively realistic videos.

The new tool consists of various models, the main being text-to-video, and is said to outperform competitors like Runway’s Gen3.

The system generates sounds to match the visuals, such as car engine noises or music. It offers an easy way to make changes by updating text prompts—like switching the background or altering a character’s clothing.

Here’s what it does:

  • Converts text into video with matching sounds but no speech.

  • Allows easy video edits by updating prompts, and making adjustments without recreating the entire video.

  • Generates video in 768p resolution, upscaled to 1080p, with up to 16 seconds of footage at 16 frames per second.

Pixels, frames, and AI

However, it comes with limitations, such as producing videos at an outdated resolution of 768 pixels and an unusual frame rate of 16 frames per second. Yeah, my iPhone 4 could film better than that.

While Movie Gen won't include voice generation yet, Meta aims to keep the tool safe from misuse, especially in sensitive political contexts.

The company has no plans to release the model publicly.

OPENAI

OpenAI’s video generation project, Sora, has seen a key departure: co-lead Tim Brooks has left to join Google DeepMind, where he’ll work on video generation and “world simulators.”

After two years with OpenAI, Brooks shared his move on X, while DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis welcomed him, noting his role in bringing the “world simulator” concept closer to reality.

DeepMind has already explored this concept with Genie, a model that can create interactive virtual worlds from images, photos, and sketches, with uses in games, films, and AI training.

Here’s what you should know:

  • Tim Brooks, formerly co-lead of Sora, has joined Google DeepMind to work on video generation and world simulation.

  • Sora faces technical issues; early versions took over 10 minutes to make a one-minute clip.

  • Competitors like Runway have secured partnerships with major studios, such as Lionsgate, while OpenAI hasn’t announced long-term collaborations.

Is the vision still strong?

Brooks joined OpenAI in January 2023, launching Sora and shaping its research and large-model training.

However, Sora has struggled against rivals like Runway, which recently teamed up with Lionsgate.

Stability AI, another competitor, has recruited big names, including director James Cameron, to its board.

Brooks’ exit follows a trend of senior staff leaving OpenAI, including CTO Mira Murati, research officer Bob McGrew, and VP Barret Zoph in September.

This turnover happens as AI competition grows sharper and the industry landscape shifts.
