😮 META AI CHIEF’S AI DOUBTS
Meta’s chief scientist and deep learning pioneer Yann LeCun said he believes that current AI systems are decades away from reaching some semblance of sentience, and has played down general fears about artificial general intelligence.
Meow. Woof.
Society is more likely to get “cat-level” or “dog-level” AI years before human-level AI, LeCun said.
He thinks that it’s going to be a long time before AI is equipped with common sense that can push their abilities beyond merely summarizing mountains of text in creative ways.

Not coming anytime soon according to LeCun.
“Text is a very poor source of information,” LeCun said, explaining that it would likely take 20,000 years for a human to read the amount of text used to train LLMs.
“Train a system on the equivalent of 20,000 years of reading material, and they still don’t understand that if A is the same as B, then B is the same as A.”
It seems LeCun has AI doubts…
Nvidia disagrees!
This view is in stark contrast to AI kings Nvidia, who believe a total AI revolution is just around the corner.
CEO Jensen Huang, recently said AI will be “fairly competitive” with humans in less than five years, besting people at a multitude of mentally intensive tasks.
However it’s worth remembering… the more AI chips Nvidia can sell, the higher their stock price will go…
OUR VIEW:
I imagine the real answer is somewhere in the middle - the amount of progress we’ve seen in just a year is incredible.

👃 AI CAN SMELL WINE?
Scientists have created an AI that can detect fake wines, by “smelling” them.
Researchers used machine learning to distinguish wines based on subtle differences in the concentrations of scores of compounds, allowing them to track the wines back not only to a particular vine-growing region but to the estate where the wine was made.
How is this possible?
To train the program, the scientists used gas chromatography, which had been used to analyse 80 wines harvested over 12 years from seven different estates in France.
The AI draws on all of the chemicals detected in the wine to work out the most reliable signature for each.
Many factors, from the grapes and the soil to the microclimate and the winemaking process, influence the concentrations of compounds found in the wines at each chateaux.
The AI was able to trace wines back to the correct chateaux with 99% accuracy!
OUR VIEW:
AI making wine better. Pretty cool! Hold the antifreeze, will ya?
