Meet your AI twin
+ Would you trust AI lifeguards?
Some sea cucumbers can expel their internal organs to deter predators. These organs are toxic and eventually regenerate - thankfully for the cucumbers.

META
Meta has launched AI Studio, a tool allowing US users to create AI versions of themselves on Instagram or the web.
This tool is intended for creators and businesses to use AI profiles to engage with their followers on their behalf.
These AI profiles can participate in chat threads and respond to comments.
Creators can tailor their AI to match their Instagram content, set topics to avoid, and share specific links.
They can also activate auto-replies and specify which accounts their AI can interact with.
Additionally, AI Studio enables the creation of entirely new AI characters to be used across Meta’s apps, similar to platforms like Character.AI and Replika.
Here’s what’s happening:
AI Studio lets US users create AI profiles for Instagram and the web.
Creators can customise AI responses, auto-replies, and interactions.
New AI characters can be created and used across Meta’s apps.
You, but made with AI
Meta’s initial approach involved celebrities creating AI versions of themselves with different names and personas, aiming to prevent potential issues.
Despite these measures, there are still risks, as generative AI can be unpredictable.
To mitigate this, Meta ensures AI profiles are clearly labelled and provides a handbook for creators to guide the AI creation process.

AI SCIENCE
Padaro Beach, California, is a local favourite for swimming.
But a few years ago, this beach became a hotspot for juvenile great white sharks.
This prompted the University of California Santa Barbara’s Benioff Ocean Science Laboratory (BOSL) to launch SharkEye, a project using drones to keep track of shark activities.
SharkEye sends text alerts to over 80 people, including lifeguards and surf shop owners, whenever sharks are detected.
However, humans monitoring drone footage only sport sharks about 60% of the time due to obstacles like sun glare and rough waters.
Could AI fill in the gaps?
The rundown:
SharkEye Alerts are text notifications to lifeguards and locals when sharks are detected.
AI already shows promise in outperforming human detection.
There are plans for AI-assisted and potentially fully automated alerts.
Keeping the beaches bite-free with AI
SharkEye has been monitoring the coastline for about five years, sometimes spotting up to 15 juvenile great whites in a day.
Early tests show that AI detects most sharks seen by humans and even some that are missed.
This summer, the project is field-testing its technology, comparing AI detection to human counts.
Currently, community alerts are based on human analysis, but AI-assisted reports could be in place by next summer.
Eventually, the process might become fully automated, updating speed and accuracy.
AI technologies are also used worldwide to mitigate human-wildlife conflicts, from alerting Indian villagers about tigers to managing dangerous creatures in Australia.
SharkEye plans to make its model free for researchers and create an AI-powered app for lifeguards and drone hobbyists.
Shark Week will never be the same.
