MICROSOFT

At the start of 2023, Microsoft faced a public relations issue.

After investing billions in OpenAI and integrating AI into its Bing search engine, the technology quickly gained negative attention.

Users reported offensive content, including racial slurs. This highlighted the inherent bias that can exist in AI models.

Microsoft responded by limiting the AI’s capabilities and later replaced it with Copilot, now part of Microsoft 365 and Windows.

AI bias though, isn’t unique to Microsoft.

Other companies, such as Google, have faced similar problems.

Microsoft’s solution focuses on diverse teams to build AI that better represents all users.

Lindsay-Rae McIntyre, Microsoft’s Chief Diversity Officer, believes diverse teams are essential for creating fairer and empathetic AI tools.

The key takeaways:

  • Microsoft views diversity as key to solving AI bias.

  • Copilot is part of their efforts to build more inclusive AI tools.

  • The company is investing in diverse teams to develop accurate AI models.

Not perfect, but a work in progress

McIntyre stresses that diversity in AI development is crucial.

Even with diverse teams, AI models can still reflect biases if trained on biased data, but the company believes these issues can be tackled with inclusive practices from the start.

Microsoft’s workforce reflects this focus, with nearly 55% from racial and ethnic minorities, and 31% women.

By embedding diversity into AI, Microsoft aims to ensure its technology performs fairly, with a commitment to responsible development and inclusion.

Can AI ever be truly bias-free?

YOUTUBE

YouTube is developing new tools to help creators control how their voice or image is copied using generative AI.

The goal is to protect creators while allowing them to use AI creatively and responsibly.

Begone copycats!

One key tool, "synthetic singing identification," will help artists detect and manage videos that use AI to mimic their singing voices.

It will be part of YouTube's Content ID system and will be tested in a pilot programme next year.

Here are the key bits:

  • AI tools will help creators manage how their voice or image is used.

  • A facial deepfake detection system is being developed.

  • YouTube is taking action against content scraping by AI companies.

Can’t be sneaky now

YouTube is also working on a tool to detect facial deepfakes of creators and celebrities, but no release date has been given.

Additionally, they are addressing unauthorised content scraping by AI firms like OpenAI and Nvidia.

The platform says AI should support creativity, not replace it, and promises to give creators more control over how AI companies use their content, with more details to come later this year.

Can we do something about all those lame reaction videos too?
