GOOGLE

Google is set to reveal its new AI tool, "Project Jarvis," in December, according to The Information (Yes, that is the name of the AI from Iron Man).

Jarvis aims to handle everyday online tasks like researching, shopping, and booking flights, all within Chrome.

Built on Google’s Gemini AI model, it can read screenshots, click buttons, and type out commands to complete tasks.

Other major tech companies are developing similar AI tools.

Microsoft’s Copilot Vision lets users interact with websites, while Apple Intelligence is expected to handle tasks across multiple apps next year.

Anthropic and OpenAI are also creating similar tools but are still refining accuracy and reliability.

Here’s what you should know:

  • Project Jarvis is designed to manage tasks like online shopping and research within Chrome.

  • Tech giants like Microsoft and Apple are working on comparable tools.

  • Jarvis may launch with a small test group to help iron out any issues.

Browsing made breezy

Google’s planned December reveal could change, with initial access given to limited testers for feedback and improvements.

OPENAI

OpenAI’s transcription tool, Whisper, is promoted as “human-level” accurate but is facing reliability issues.

Experts say Whisper often produces inaccurate or invented text, known as “hallucinations.”

These errors can include racial comments or made-up medical treatments.

Such mistakes are concerning since Whisper is widely used for transcription in different sectors, including medical settings where accuracy is crucial.

Studies have found a high rate of hallucinations in Whisper’s transcriptions, even with clear audio.

For example, a University of Michigan study found inaccuracies in 80% of cases.

Whisper remains popular, though, with over 4.2 million downloads in a month on the open-source platform HuggingFace, used for tasks from customer service to video captions.

In brief:

  • Whisper’s hallucinations pose risks in high-stakes areas, especially healthcare.

  • Whisper is the most popular open-source speech model despite accuracy issues.

  • In healthcare, audio is often deleted after transcription, raising privacy and accuracy concerns.

A wild guess

In healthcare, some providers use Whisper to transcribe doctor-patient conversations, which could affect patient care if records are inaccurate.

Often, recordings are erased after transcription, making verification impossible.

This is especially worrying as companies like Microsoft manage patient data, leading to privacy concerns.

OpenAI has acknowledged the hallucination issue and continues to release updates.

Some suggest these issues require stronger action, potentially including government regulation.

Did my AI just invent a disease? I’m both impressed and concerned.
