NVIDIA

Is the smartest AI investment selling the infrastructure?

Speaking at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media and Telecom conference in San Francisco, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said the company may not make further investments in OpenAI or Anthropic.

If both companies go public later this year, the window for private investment would likely close.

Nvidia already benefits heavily from selling the chips that power both companies’ AI systems, so it has less need to increase its financial stakes.

Huang has previously said these investments were mainly about strengthening Nvidia’s broader AI ecosystem.

Some analysts have also questioned the structure of these deals.

Nvidia invests in AI companies, while those same companies spend large amounts buying Nvidia chips, creating a circular flow of capital.

In brief:

  • Nvidia may stop investing further in OpenAI and Anthropic ahead of possible IPOs.

  • The company already profits significantly from selling the chips that power their AI systems.

  • Political and strategic differences across the AI sector are adding complexity to these partnerships.

The Nvidia loop

At the same time, the relationship between major AI developers is becoming more complex.

Anthropic recently faced U.S. government restrictions after refusing to allow its models to be used for autonomous weapons or mass surveillance.

Shortly after, OpenAI announced its own partnership with the Pentagon.

These contrasting approaches highlight how quickly the AI landscape is shifting, leaving Nvidia connected to companies taking different paths.
