The boss of news company Reuters has said she would be astonished if AI is not being used to write news stories in mainstream publications by the end of 2023.

Sue Brooks believes AI could create a “golden age” of news (hopefully not of the fake kind), thanks to its ability to free up writers to be more creative. Reuters plans to invest $100M a year into AI, and soon all Reuters articles will use AI tools to produce automated time-coded transcripts, translation into English and identification of public figures.

On AI writing news, she said: “I would be astonished if not. We’re experimenting the whole time. We’re reviewing the whole time. We are talking about guidelines and guidance and oversight by editorial people and complete transparency for anything that does involve AI.”

The company has been using AI to translate some news already, but took three years to develop a system accurate enough. With the recent leaps forward in generative AI, this is a completely different kettle of fish.

A woman in Australia found out the hard way when she sent in a snap of her son that she’d captured on her phone, only for it to be rejected for after judges were suspicious it was generated by AI!

The judge said: “When this image came up, we all loved it, then I said, ‘Hang on it looks a little AI-ish,’ then we all started talking about it and went well, we can’t know for sure it is or isn’t, but on the basis we’re suspicious we can’t allow it in.”

The woman, Suzy Dougherty, saw the funny side when asked if she was upset: “No, if they think it’s AI it must be OK!”
