The Antikythera Mechanism, found in a Greek shipwreck in 1901 is like the grandfather of all gadgets. Dating back to around 100 BC, it's an ancient Greek analogue computer designed to map out the skies, predicting astronomical positions and eclipses with uncanny accuracy. For its time, it was a mind-blowingly sophisticated piece of tech, showing just how advanced ancient thinkers were.

TODAY:

  • Humane’s AI Pin - it’s not good!

  • Apple’s M4 AI chips!

  • Around the web: They fired someone at OpenAI (Yikes).

  • How you can get in early with RAD AI!

GADGETS

The Humane AI Pin is officially out. It has introduced a novel approach to technology by offering a device without a screen that simplifies how we interact with our digital tasks.

It’s operated by voice commands through an AI assistant and runs on something called CosmOS.

We were all mind-blown with the reveal - a little pin that can project a screen onto your hands - but doubts were raised with the lack of demos in the build-up to release.

Not only that but in addition to the $700 the device costs, you have to pay a $24 a month subscription - if you stop paying the sub? Your $700 pin becomes a paperweight. Seriously.

It needs its own phone number, however, it only connects through T-Mobile and won’t use your existing phone number, which would be frustrating.

The concept behind the AI Pin is to minimise screen time, encouraging users to be more present in their everyday lives rather than glued to their devices.

The reviews are in - and, well, it’s not looking good for Humane.

What are people saying about it?

The Verge points out It struggles with basic tasks like setting timers, or managing calendars and has issues with overheating and short battery life.

Not only that, but the device simply doesn't work most of the time, with the AI model failing to produce a response. $700 well spent?

Wired meanwhile mentions that the device can play music… but only through Tidal - yeah there’s no Spotify or Apple Music support.

Engadget’s review highlights overheating issues, and how the laser screen is gimmicky to operate.

Here’s what you should know:

  • The AI Pin is designed to reduce our reliance on screens

  • The reviews are negative, highlighting a myriad of issues from missing basic functionality to overheating and battery life.

  • Future updates may improve its capabilities and reliability, but it may come too late

Humane has responded and said future software updates will add more functionality to the device and improve its operation - but the question remains… why did they release it in this state?

The award for the worst $700 ever spent goes to…

APPLE

Apple is set to launch its new M4 processors, which will boost AI capabilities across its Mac products, signally a shift towards AI for the tech giant.

The updated lineup will include new iMacs, and various models of MacBook Pros and Mac minis, with releases scheduled from late this year to early next.

The wait is finally over!

These new chips are designed to perform complex generative AI tasks, like summarising documents, directly on the device, eliminating the need for cloud processing.

Here are some highlights:

  • Apple's new M4 processors will be featured in its full range of Macs starting later this year.

  • The shift towards PCs with powerful AI chips aims to reinvigorate the market following recent declines.

  • Competitors like Intel, Qualcomm, and Nvidia are also developing new AI chips, aiming to enhance computing autonomy.

As companies like Intel and Qualcomm develop similar technologies, Nvidia also aims to introduce new chips to the market by 2025.

Meanwhile, Apple is upgrading its next macOS with AI capabilities to improve performance and function.

Waiting for the next Mac feels like a child waiting for Christmas morning. WE WANT IT, NOW!

Don’t Miss - OpenAI recently fired two researchers, including Leopols Aschenbrenner, a close associate of chief of scientist Ilya Sutskever, for allegedly leaking information. The specifics of the leaked content aren’t clear, but the firings come amid internal conflicts with OpenAI, including a dramatic shake-up last November when CEO Sam Altman was temporarily fired. This move, described by some as a coup by Sutskever, followed complaints about Altman's communication with the board.
