🪧 HOLLYWOOD ACTORS STRIKE OVER AI

Hollywood actors have joined Hollywood writers in what is the biggest industry shutdown in decades. The Screen Actors Guild joined the strike yesterday because of unfair pay and concerns about - you guessed it - AI.

Actors are concerned that digital likenesses could replace themselves in movies. In fact, Hollywood companies are already trying it, with Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, SAG-AFTRA’s chief negotiator, revealing the following:

“This ‘groundbreaking’ AI proposal that they gave us yesterday, they proposed that our background performers should be able to be scanned, get one day’s pay, and their companies should own that scan, their image, their likeness and should be able to use it for the rest of eternity on any project they want, with no consent and no compensation.”

Now that’s a sh*tty deal. The claims have been denied, but it’s hard to imagine this going any other way in the future, unless actors can draw a line under this soon.

Let there be chaos.

Midjourney lets you set a chaos value between 0 and 100, giving the image bot greater creative freedom. This is different to the weirdness value, which makes things… weird.

🇨🇳 CHINA REGULATIONS COMING NEXT MONTH

China has published new rules on generative AI which come into force next month, making them one of the first places in the world to regulate tools like ChatGPT.

The rules are being called intermittent measures, while more serious and thought-out regulation is being designed.

Among the most critical rules is a requirement for generative AI companies to conduct security reviews and register their algorithms with the government - if their services are capable of influencing public opinion or can “mobilise” the public.

The state does say however that it encourages the innovative usage of AI and expects companies to participate in the international formulation of standards.

Can Chinese companies lead the way or are they too far behind the American tech giants?
