Hinge is done with your silent likes

Hinge users are getting tired of matches who like their profiles but never start a conversation, leaving both sides unsure of who should go first.

Many people end up using the same basic openers, which doesn’t help much.

To fix this, Hinge has launched Convo Starters, an AI tool that gives personalised suggestions for first messages.

When someone likes a profile, they’ll now see three tips connected to each photo or prompt.

The AI looks at what’s on the profile and offers ideas based on those details, for example, a chess photo might lead to a suggestion about board games.

Hinge says the feature was built in response to user feedback.

Their data shows that 72% of daters are more likely to consider someone when a like includes a message, and people who leave comments are twice as likely to end up arranging a date.

Three things to note:

  • Hinge now uses AI to help users start conversations more easily.

  • Adding a message to a like strongly increases the chance of getting a date.

  • Gen Z is more cautious about AI in dating than older age groups.

The anti-“hey” feature

This update follows Hinge’s Prompt Feedback feature, which uses AI to review profile prompts and encourage users to add clearer, more engaging details.

However, many Gen Z users are still unsure about AI in dating apps.

A Bloomberg Intelligence survey found they feel more uneasy about AI writing prompts or replies than older generations do.

Hinge’s parent company, Match Group, is investing $20m–$30m into its broader AI work.
