Happy Birthday, ChatGPT!
Yes, it’s really been a whole year since the public release of the tool.
Where were you when your mind was blown?
To celebrate, I thought we should look back over the rollercoaster year that ChatGPT has had. It’s been quite the ride!
The Launch
When it launched, ChatGPT was a simple text input and output bot, with data limited up to September 2021 - but the results were still mind-blowing.
I’ll be honest - I don’t think I even used ChatGPT until the new year!
But then things started getting crazy…
On February 1, OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Plus at $20 a month – promising access to beta features. A month later, they rolled out GPT-4. Smarter, slicker, and more advanced than its predecessor.
Then came the glorious plugins. Suddenly ChatGPT seemed so much more.
Ups and downs
It wasn’t all smooth sailing - on April 1st Italy banned ChatGPT in the first big backlash against the software. But just a month later it was accessible again!
By the middle of Summer, the ChatGPT app was available on every platform.

Then came DALL-E 3 integration inside ChatGPT, as well as custom GPTs. ChatGPT turned into an entire platform!
This month, GPT-4 Turbo launched, highlighting the highest moment of the year, when it looked like nothing could go wrong…
And then just after we saw the Altman drama play out in front of our very eyes!
What an incredible year it’s been.

🧪 DEEPMIND AI DISCOVERS 2M NEW MATERIALS
Google’s DeepMind AI has done it again.
Researchers have used the AI supercomputer to produce a list of 2 MILLION new materials, previously unknown to science.
The materials are different arrangements of crystal structures.
Is this significant?
In a word - Yes.
This discovery amounts to 45 times more than the number of such substances unearthed in the history of science!
That doesn't mean every single material is viable, but the researchers plan to make 381,000 of the most promising structures available to fellow scientists to make and test their viability in fields from solar cells to superconductors.
How did they do it? They uploaded the 48,000 known materials to the AI, and it produced 2 million similar ones!
The number of substances found is equivalent to almost 800 years of previous experimentally acquired knowledge, DeepMind estimated. WTF!
