Google’s new AI app doesn’t even need Wi-Fi

Google has quietly come out with a new app called AI Edge Gallery, now available on Android (with iOS on the way).

It lets you run a bunch of open-source AI models from Hugging Face right on your phone, and the best part? No internet needed.

You can generate images, write code, answer questions, and more, all offline using your phone’s own processor.

The app gives you shortcuts to tasks like “AI Chat” or “Ask Image,” and once you tap in, you’ll see a list of compatible models to choose from, including Google’s own Gemma 3n.

There’s also a Prompt Lab, which lets you run quick, one-off tasks like summarising or rewriting text using ready-made templates.

How well it works depends on your phone. Newer devices will handle bigger models faster, while older ones might lag a bit, especially if you’re using something large.

In brief:

  • Models work fully offline, no Wi-Fi, no data sharing.

  • Tasks include chat, image generation, coding, and rewriting.

  • Runs better on newer phones; larger models may take more time.

No cloud? No cries

Google’s calling this an “experimental Alpha release,” and they’re looking for developer feedback.

It’s all open source under the Apache 2.0 license, so it’s free to use or build on for just about anything.

This is what I imagine hacking in the movies feels like.
