Google revealed how much of its code is AI-generated

As of last Wednesday, 75% of Google’s new code is AI-generated.

It’s a major benchmark that’s been highly incentivised. Not only have developers been using Gemini for years, but some teams also have AI targets they need to hit each quarter. Google isn’t messing around when it comes to early adoption.

Now, quick clarification. “AI-generated” means, well, the code is generated by AI. But it’s not exclusively executed via LLMs. New code is still thoroughly reviewed and edited by Google’s engineers, who are directly involved in the process.

That said, Google is giving us a pretty clear glimpse into the future of software development.

Let’s take a look at the timeline:

  • In October 2024, a quarter of Google’s code was written by AI.

  • That rose to 50% in late 2025.

  • The company just hit the 75% milestone this month, with no signs of slowing down.

Everybody’s Doing It

Of course, Google isn’t the only one moving in this direction.

Microsoft’s code is around 20-30% AI-generated, and their CTO predicts the company will reach 95% in the next five years. Meanwhile, Snap is about 65% and Meta is aggressively working towards a goal of over 75% AI-assisted code from 65% of its Creation Lab team. (Phew, that’s a lot of percentages!)

Needless to say, writing code by hand is quickly becoming a novel pastime.

75%?! Well, that escalated quickly - TL
