GOOGLE

Google is introducing a new feature in its search results to show if an image was taken by a camera, edited with software like Photoshop, or created by AI.

The update, called "about this image," will help people know more about where images come from. So, be careful what you upload!

The system behind this is part of the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA).

This standard tracks the origins of images and is supported by big companies like Amazon, Microsoft, Adobe, and Google.

Even though adoption has been slow, Google's integration in search results will be a key test for C2PA.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Google will show if an image was created or edited with AI in search results.

  • C2PA, supported by big tech firms, tracks where images originate, though it’s still not widely used.

  • Some camera brands, like Nikon and Canon, are expected to adopt the C2PA standard, but it’s early days.

Digitally approved

Google helped develop the latest C2PA version and will use a “trust list” to verify images' authenticity.

For example, if an image shows it was taken by a certain camera model, the trust list will confirm this is true.

Google also plans to add this system to its ads and explore using it on YouTube.

Despite Google leading the way, there are still challenges.

Only a few cameras, like those from Leica and Sony, support C2PA, which adds details like camera settings and location to the image.

Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom already support C2PA, but many tools, like Affinity Photo, do not.

Viewing the image data is also tricky, as most platforms don't yet display this information.

Laurie Richardson, Google’s vice president of trust and safety, said: “While there’s no one-size-fits-all solution for online content, working with others in the industry is key to building sustainable, interoperable solutions.”

#NoFilter just got a whole new meaning.

AI VIDEO

Lionsgate has signed a deal with AI video company Runway, signalling that major studios will soon be integrating generative AI into their productions.

Lionsgate has agreed to give Runway usage of its content library for training, in exchange for a bespoke AI model it can use in its own output.

The model will be used for storyboarding initially, and is expected to lead to major cost savings in the pre-production process.

Here’s what you should know:

  • Runway will get access to all of Lionsgate’s content for model training.

  • Lionsgate will get its own bespoke video model.

  • The deal could set the precedent for future collaborations.

The first step towards the new normal?

The move is an industry first which could lay the groundwork for deals going forward. The studio realised it could risk falling behind by not embracing AI, so sought out and agreed a deal, according to Vice Chairman Michael Burns.

While other companies like Disney have engaged in discussions, no other major company has agreed to a deal.
