Google’s playing around with a new “AI Mode” on its Search homepage, and a few users in the US have started spotting it in the wild.
Depending on who you ask, the AI chatbot button is popping up in different places, sometimes next to the image search icon, and in other cases, it’s replacing the classic “I’m Feeling Lucky” button (did anyone actually use it?).
There’s also some flair to how it looks.
A rotating border appears when you hover over it, and in some versions, it’s there by default, likely to make the feature stand out.
Google confirmed earlier this month that a small number of users would be getting access via its experimental Labs programme, so this isn’t a full rollout just yet.
In brief:
A small group of US users are seeing “AI Mode” pop up in Google Search.
In some tests, it replaces the long-running “I’m Feeling Lucky” button.
The feature is part of Google’s Labs and isn’t widely available (yet).
A spokesperson said they’re always testing new ways for people to access useful tools, and this is just one of them.
It’s not certain that the “I’m Feeling Lucky” button is going away for good, but it’s clear Google is rethinking how people interact with search.
RIP “I’m Feeling Lucky,” we barely used you, but we’ll still miss you.
