Google decoded the ocean. Maybe?
AI can already communicate in dozens of human languages. Now, researchers are exploring whether it could help us communicate with dolphins.
Denise Herzing, founder of the Wild Dolphin Project, has spent 40 years studying dolphin communication.
A fish out of bandwidth
Her team is now working with Georgia Tech and Google DeepMind to use AI to analyse decades of recordings and identify patterns in dolphin sounds.
The research is also exploring ways to communicate directly with dolphins:
Researchers have developed a wearable computer that plays dolphin sounds to see how the animals respond.
The team links specific whistles to objects, such as scarves, to test whether dolphins can recognise their meaning.
Researchers still need to determine whether dolphins understand these sounds or are simply copying them.
While AI is helping researchers identify patterns, fully understanding dolphin communication remains a long-term goal.
Dolphins are about to lose their right to remain squealent. (THIS IS MY BEST JOKE)- MG
