+ AI coding just got insane

Cheetahs can’t roar like lions or tigers; instead, they chirp, purr, and meow like domestic cats due to differences in their voice box anatomy. We still can’t pet them though, which sucks.

What’s in store:

  • Google’s coming out with an AI tool that’ll summarise your meetings.

  • There’s an AI that codes so you don’t have to.

  • Around the web: Yelp sues Google, claiming it monopolises local search services by favouring its own products.

GOOGLE

Google has added a huge new feature to Meet: Gemini will now take notes in all of your meetings.

This tool builds on an existing transcription service, but instead of transcribing everything, it summarises key points from the meeting.

Announced at the 2023 Cloud Next conference, it's currently limited to English.

The feature automatically creates a Google Doc with the meeting notes, attaching it to the calendar event and sharing it with the organiser and anyone who enabled the feature.

If you join a meeting late, you’ll get a summary of what you missed to catch up quickly.

In brief:

  • "Take notes for me" summarises meetings and attaches notes to the calendar event.

  • Currently supports only English, available to select Google Workspace users.

  • Full rollout by September 10th, 2024, with accuracy still uncertain.

If you forgot it, Google won’t

For those using Google Meet’s recording and transcription tools, links to these files will be included in the same Google Doc.

This feature could also help those who find it challenging to listen and take notes simultaneously.

Google plans to complete the rollout by September 10th, 2024.

However, concerns remain about the accuracy of the feature, given past issues with the transcription tool’s reliability.

Once you get those AI meeting summaries, you never go back.

AI CODING

This week, Cursor, an AI coding tool, has gained significant attention on social media.

Unlike other tools, Cursor can handle nearly all coding tasks, turning simple ideas into functional code in minutes.

Cursor combines a development environment with AI chatbot features, based on Microsoft Visual Studio Code.

It has quickly become popular among both beginners and experienced coders, with over 30,000 users, including employees from Perplexity, MidJourney, and OpenAI.

Key takeaways:

  • Cursor automates coding, allowing users to create apps with minimal effort.

  • Suited for beginners and experts alike, with a rapidly growing user base.

  • Aims to automate 95% of coding.

Manual coding? So yesterday

Founded in 2022, the startup has raised over $400 million and uses models like Anthropic’s Claude and OpenAI’s GPT-4.

Cursor’s goal is to automate up to 95% of coding, letting engineers focus on the creativity aspect of their jobs.

Its simple chat interface makes it easy to build apps, even for those with basic coding knowledge.

In testing, Cursor created a fully functional habit tracker app in Python within 35 minutes, without any manual coding.

While it may not be perfect for non-tech users, it’s a powerful tool for anyone with some coding know-how.

Maybe I should become a coder now.
