Gemini now makes Google Sheets a little smarter

GEMINI

Google just gave Gemini a boost in Sheets, making it easier to analyse data and create visualisations—without touching a single formula.

The AI can now generate insights on trends and create static charts based on your spreadsheet data.

The feature is rolling out to most Workspace plans and Google One AI Premium users ($19.99/month), with full availability expected by February 20th.

What Gemini can do in Sheets:

  • Analyse trends by answering questions about your data.

  • Create static charts that you can insert as images.

  • Run Python code to generate deeper insights when needed.

  • Use standard formulas for simpler queries.

The fine print

Gemini’s charts are static, meaning they won’t update when your data changes—you’ll have to generate a new one each time.

Traditional Sheets charts, on the other hand, will always reflect live data updates.

Google also warns that inconsistent formatting or missing values could impact Gemini’s accuracy.

This update follows other AI-powered additions to Google Workspace, which arrived alongside a price hike that some users weren’t thrilled about.

Still, Google is betting big on AI integrations across its tools, even if it means pushing them onto customers.

For casual users, Gemini’s Sheets upgrade could be a helpful shortcut.

However, for frequent data analysts, the lack of dynamic updates might be a dealbreaker.

One thing’s for sure: Google really wants AI in your workflow, whether you asked for it or not.
