Gemini is about to rewrite how we translate

Google is testing a new feature that lets you hear real-time translations through any pair of headphones.

You open the Translate app, tap “Live translate,” and listen as the app translates what’s being said.

Google says it keeps each speaker’s tone and pacing so conversations are easier to follow.

The beta is now live on Android in the U.S., Mexico, and India, with iOS and more countries planned for 2026. It supports more than 70 languages.

Translate is also getting an upgrade through Google’s Gemini tech.

The update should make translations sound more natural and better at handling slang, idioms, and phrases that don’t work literally.

Key points to know:

  • Real-time headphone translations now in beta for Android, covering 70+ languages.

  • Gemini updates improve accuracy and context in English-to-20-language translations.

  • Expanded language-learning tools add more countries, better feedback, and daily streak tracking.

Streaks, but don’t break them

It’s rolling out in the U.S. and India for English and nearly 20 other languages, across Android, iOS, and the web.

Google is also expanding its language-learning tools to almost 20 new countries. Users can now practise English or German depending on their native language.

The app will offer clearer feedback on speaking exercises, plus a new streak tracker to help users stay consistent, bringing it closer to other popular learning apps.

I used to dream of having a device that did this. Dream come true? - MV
