OPENAI

From a GitHub project to OpenAI’s inner circle

Peter Steinberger, the founder of OpenClaw, is joining OpenAI, according to CEO Sam Altman.

OpenClaw will stay open source, but it will now run under a foundation, with OpenAI continuing to support it.

Altman said Steinberger will help build the next wave of personal AI agents.

OpenClaw is an assistant tool that can help with tasks like managing emails, dealing with insurance, checking in for flights, and other everyday jobs.

Since launching in November, OpenClaw has grown fast.

It has gained over 100,000 stars on GitHub and attracted about 2 million visitors in one week.

In brief:

  • OpenClaw’s creator is joining OpenAI

  • The project will remain open source under a foundation

  • Rapid growth has also brought security warnings

The project has also raised concerns.

China’s industry ministry warned that open-source AI agents could create security problems if not set up properly, possibly leading to cyberattacks or data leaks.

Steinberger said keeping OpenClaw open source was important to him, and he believes OpenAI is the best place to help it grow further.
