Forget ChatGPT, xAI wants to recreate the universe

Elon Musk’s AI company, xAI, is working on “world models”, new AI systems that learn how the real world works, not just how to predict text.

The goal is to create technology that can understand movement, space, and physics, and even design 3D environments.

The San Francisco start-up recently hired two experts from Nvidia, Zeeshan Patel and Ethan He, to help build these systems.

Nvidia has been a leader in the field through its Omniverse platform, which runs complex virtual simulations.

Musk has said xAI plans to release a fully AI-generated video game before the end of next year.

The company is also hiring for roles in image, video, and game design, with salaries between $180,000 and $440,000.

Here’s what you should know:

  • xAI is developing “world models” that help AI understand the real world.

  • The company plans to launch an AI-made video game in 2026.

  • Experts warn data limits and creativity are still major challenges.

Grok goes gamer mode

There’s even a “video games tutor” role to train xAI’s chatbot, Grok, to create games.

World models are expected to go beyond current AI tools like ChatGPT or Sora, which only generate text or videos.

They could power robots or real-world simulations, but building them takes huge amounts of data and computing power.

Not everyone in the gaming industry is convinced.

Michael Douse from Baldur’s Gate 3 developer Larian Studios said AI can’t fix what the industry really lacks, “leadership and vision.”
