AI DEVELOPMENT

Tech companies are shifting from large, expensive AI systems to smaller, more affordable ones.

So far in the AI space race, companies have focused on giant models that require intense computing power - but now they are starting to look at the other end of things.

Microsoft has launched its Phi-3 series, introducing three smaller AI models.

The most compact of these models nearly matches the performance of GPT-3.5, but is optimised to work on standard computer chips and even offline on smartphones.

Why less might actually be more

These smaller models reduce costs for providers and users, making AI technology more accessible across various sectors.

While these models aren’t as powerful—potentially impacting accuracy and smoothness—the cost benefits are expected to attract users who need AI for simpler tasks.

Here’s what you should know:

  • The smallest Phi-3 model works on mobile devices and doesn't need an internet connection, enhancing accessibility.

  • The introduction of smaller AI models significantly cuts costs, making frequent use across industries more viable.

  • The reduced power and precision of these models are countered by their affordability and broader usability, especially for non-critical applications

These mini-AIs might not write the next Oscar winner, but hey, at least they can write a thank-you note to your Grandma.

AI DEEPFAKES

Polish director Patryk Vega is set to release "Putin," a unique biopic of the Russian president on 26 September, which will be available in 35 countries.

Unsurprisingly, the Russian president wasn’t available for filming - so Vega came up with a 2024 solution.

The film uses advanced AI to render Mr Putin. He decided to use AI due to the unavailability of sufficient archival material for a traditional cinematic portrayal.

Putin on the big screen

The project, which began development in May 2022, also includes footage shot by Ukrainian filmmakers during the Russian invasion, adding depth and authenticity to the portrayal.

The film presents an intimate look at Putin's life, depicting various aspects, including unusual scenarios - like him in a nappy (that’s a diaper, American friends).

What you should know about it

  • Vega's breakthrough AI technology creates a realistic depiction of Putin, circumventing the need for the actual person.

  • The film will be shown in multiple countries, indicating its wide-reaching impact.

  • Integrates authentic footage from ongoing conflicts, providing a closer look at contemporary political dynamics.

Vega describes the film as more than just entertainment; it's an attempt to demystify one of the most controversial figures in modern politics and help viewers understand his actions and motivations.

Seeing Putin in a nappy might just be the comic relief we need from global politics these days.
