Firefox is done being quiet

Mozilla has appointed Anthony Enzor-DeMeo as its new CEO, replacing Laura Chambers, who served as interim chief for the past two years.

Enzor-DeMeo has led Firefox since August 2025 and joined Mozilla in late 2024 from real estate platform Roofstock.

Mozilla says his leadership helped speed up Firefox updates and shape how AI features are added in a more transparent and user-controlled way.

Firefox has seen double-digit growth on mobile over the past two years, while its desktop market share has stabilised.

Recent AI tools, such as Shake to Summarise on iOS and the upcoming AI Window, reflect Mozilla’s approach to making AI optional rather than built-in by default.

Alongside the CEO change, John Solomon has been appointed Chief Marketing Officer, and Ajit Varma has been promoted to head of Firefox.

The move comes as browser makers face growing competition around AI.

Companies like Google, OpenAI, and Perplexity are increasingly building automation directly into browsers, changing how people search and interact with the web.

Mozilla Foundation president Mark Surman described this moment as a new phase of browser competition driven by AI, with renewed room for innovation after years of limited change.

In brief:

  • Mozilla has a new CEO as it increases its focus on AI in Firefox

  • Browsers are becoming a key space for AI competition and innovation

  • Mozilla says AI features will stay optional, with privacy remaining a priority

The quiet comeback play

Mozilla says its focus remains on privacy while adjusting its business model.

Privacy-respecting ads in Firefox now make up a larger share of revenue, reducing reliance on search deals, which previously accounted for most of the company’s income.

Mozilla also spun out Mozilla AI to support open-source AI tools, aiming to give users and developers more choice over how AI is built and used.
