Firefox is adding a full AI off switch
Firefox is adding clearer controls for people who don’t want AI in their browser. Mozilla says users will soon be able to block all current and future AI features, or turn specific ones on and off.
From Firefox 148, launching 24 February, desktop users will see a new AI controls section in settings.
A single toggle lets users block all AI features and remove related prompts and pop-ups.
Those who want some AI features but not others can manage them individually.
Options include translations, AI-generated alt text in PDFs, AI tab grouping, link previews, and Firefox’s sidebar chatbot, which supports tools like ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot, Gemini, and Le Chat Mistral.
Mozilla says the update reflects mixed user expectations around AI.
Some want to avoid it entirely, while others only want features that feel useful and optional.
The change follows the appointment of Anthony Enzor-DeMeo as Mozilla’s CEO in December.
He previously said Mozilla would invest in AI, but keep it optional and transparent.

AI, but only if you ask
The update also comes as competition in the browser market increases, with newer AI-focused browsers challenging long-established players.
Alongside product changes, Mozilla says it is investing in AI transparency.
According to CNBC, the company plans to deploy around $1.4 billion from its reserves to support tech projects and non-profits focused on more accountable AI development.
