AI TECH

A new pair of AI-powered glasses is changing how people with dementia interact with their surroundings.

Though they look like chunky 90s 3D specs, they’re packed with smart tech.

The glasses show a screen that guides users by highlighting objects and explaining how to use them, learning from past interactions.

These glasses are one of five finalists in the Longitude Prize for dementia—a competition offering a $1 million reward for tech that helps people live independently.

Here are some bits about it:

  • The glasses help identify items and recall-related memories, improving with use.

  • Other finalists include devices that predict falls and help users follow daily routines.

  • Smart systems track movement without cameras and send updates to carers.

All about that brain

The glasses have a few issues, like being a bit heavy and struggling with background noise, but they hold great promise for improving daily life for people with dementia.

Kate Lee, CEO of the Alzheimer’s Society, believes AI can help people stay active and independent at home by supporting their memory and daily tasks.

The glasses’ design aims to make things simple, skipping the need to learn complex tech.

The competition started with 24 semi-finalists, who shared $1.9 million in funding.

Five finalists will get another $300,000 to develop their ideas, with the winner announced in 2026.

Other entries include a device using football tech to detect falls and another that combines a traditional phone with a smart screen for video calls.

Supersense Technologies has also created a radar-based system that monitors movement in the home without using cameras.

Tris Dyson of Challenge Works said this is just the beginning for AI in dementia care, hinting at more advances to come.

Dr Matt Ash from Supersense Technologies said their focus is on creating practical solutions that meet real needs without overcomplicating the technology.

One to make you feel good about AI.

META

Meta is launching new AI video editing tools to “improve” ads on Instagram and Facebook.

These tools let advertisers animate still images and expand video sizes using AI.

For example, they can make objects, like strawberries, appear to float in a video. Sorry graphic designers, we have AI now.

They also allow videos to be made larger by creating new pixels, similar to how AI image tools can extend backgrounds.

Here’s the gist:

  • Meta’s AI tools can animate images and enlarge video borders.

  • Full release of these features is expected early next year.

  • Other platforms like Amazon and TikTok are also using AI in ads.

Like a party trick

These new tools add to Meta's existing AI features for advertisers, which already include text and image generation.

They will also feature in the full-screen video tab coming to Facebook.

Meta is starting to roll out these tools now, with a broader launch planned for early next year.

Meanwhile, Amazon and TikTok are also testing AI-driven ad features.

Yea that’ll distract me for sure. I’m trying to lower my screen time, Meta 🫠
