CLOUDFARE
Every app went down at once - and it was chaos
A big internet outage on Tuesday took down X, Spotify, ChatGPT, Facebook, AWS, Canva, bet365, BrightHR, and League of Legends for thousands of users.
The issue came from Cloudflare, a company that powers about 20% of global websites.
Reports started around 11 am UTC, with platforms briefly coming back online before failing again.
Cloudflare said the problem was an internal error on its network, causing some services to work only intermittently.
In brief:
Cloudflare’s internal error caused widespread issues across major apps.
Some platforms came back online but weren’t fully stable.
One outage at a large provider can disrupt huge parts of the internet.
The longest BRB of our lives
By early afternoon, Cloudflare confirmed it had found the cause and was rolling out a fix.
The outage also happened during scheduled maintenance at its Santiago data centre.
Cybersecurity experts pointed out that this follows recent AWS and Azure glitches, showing how quickly problems spread when a major internet provider has a slip.
Just your monthly reminder that we are utterly reliant on a handful of server companies. - MV
