Even OpenAI can’t escape some copyright laws

A federal judge in California has stopped OpenAI from using the name “Cameo” for a feature inside its video app Sora, after celebrity video platform Cameo filed a trademark lawsuit.

The judge said OpenAI’s use of the name could confuse people into thinking the feature was connected to Cameo’s brand.

A preliminary injunction now blocks OpenAI from using the name while the case continues.

OpenAI disagrees with the ruling and says it will keep defending its position.

In brief:

  • OpenAI can’t use “Cameo” in Sora for now.

  • The court believes it could confuse consumers and harm Cameo’s brand.

  • AI companies are facing increasing trademark and copyright challenges.

Cameo wasn’t flattered

Cameo says the feature overlaps with its business, since Sora users can create short celebrity-style videos, which could compete directly with Cameo’s platform.

The case adds to the growing number of legal disputes AI companies face over names, content, and intellectual property.
