❌ EU CAN’T AGREE ON AI LEGISLATION
Another huge stumbling block to EU AI regulation - the trading bloc cannot agree on how to treat generative AI models.
As negotiators meet on Friday for crucial discussions ahead of final talks scheduled for Dec. 6, 'foundation models', or generative AI, have become the main hurdle in talks over the European Union's proposed AI Act, according to sources present.
Not the first time…
This isn’t the first time the EU has disagreed on AI, with the bloc previously struggling to agree to regulation, and major players from France, Germany and Italy claiming regulation will hamper their own AI companies.
Unsurprisingly, the biggest challenge to getting an agreement has come from France, Germany and Italy, who favour letting makers of generative AI models self-regulate instead of having hard rules.
Despite passing the world’s first draft AI regulation in June, it’s been anything but smooth sailing since.

CRUCIAL round two comes next week
Experts from EU countries will meet next Friday to thrash out their position on foundation models, access to source codes, fines and other topics while lawmakers from the European Parliament are also gathering to finalise their stance.
If they can't agree - the entire regulation might be shelved!

💰 £2.5B INVESTMENT IN UK AI
Microsoft is best friends with the UK government today after announcing a giant £2.5B investment in the country.
This includes doubling the number of data centres and training 1M people to be proficient in the use of AI.
The UK is already the leading European tech space, which last year was worth more than double Germany’s and three times as much as France’s. The UK’s AI sector also contributes £3.7 billion to the UK economy and employs 50,000 people across the country.
Biiiiiig money
This is the single largest investment Microsoft has made in its 40-year history in the country.
Microsoft grow its UK AI infrastructure across sites in London and Cardiff and will offer potential expansion into northern England, helping to meet the exploding demand for efficient, scalable and sustainable AI-specific compute power.
