TODAY IN MINDSTREAM:

An EU meeting on AI has broken down after countries couldn’t agree on rules relating to foundational AI models, risking the entire legislation.

The talks that took place were supposed to help decide EU regulations, but countries couldn’t accept what to do on foundational models.

Large EU countries asked to retract the proposed approach for foundation models, leading to the breakdown in talks. Unless the deadlock is broken in the coming days, the whole legislation is now at risk of collapsing.

At the end of last week, the Spanish presidency circulated a first draft of the legislation. The European Parliament replied with some modifications on Wednesday, maintaining the overall structure of the provisions.

However, at a meeting on Thursday, a technical body of the EU Councils of Ministers, representatives from several member states, most notably France, Germany and Italy, pushed against any type of regulation for foundation models.

Big AI companies in each of the countries are pushing the governments to protect them and warning they might collapse based on the new rules.

Barack Obama has spoken on AI, citing its amazing opportunities while also warning about the future.

In an appearance on The Verge’s Decoder podcast, the former president also encouraged coders to join Biden’s AI team.

Obama encouraged both those who are “fresh out of school” and “experienced tech coders” to consider joining the president’s AI talent surge.

Mr Obama urged those who “are interested in helping to shape all these amazing questions that are going to be coming up [about the technology” to apply for the roles.

He has been quietly advising the white house on AI policy for the last few months, according to insider sources.
