A moment is a medieval unit of time. In the Middle Ages, a “moment” actually meant something specific—90 seconds to be exact. So next time someone says “just a moment,” give them 90 seconds before you get mad.

ANTHROPIC

Anthropic is calling for clear and strategic regulation to manage AI risks effectively.

They believe targeted policies are needed to use AI's potential while reducing its dangers.

As AI advances in areas like maths, coding, and reasoning, the risk of misuse in cybersecurity and fields such as chemical and biological sciences grows.

Anthropic warns that the next 18 months are crucial for policymakers to act, as the chance for prevention is closing. We’ve heard that one before.

Their Frontier Red Team has shown that current models can already help with cyber-offence tasks, and future models could be even stronger.

To address these concerns, Anthropic launched its Responsible Scaling Policy (RSP) in September 2023.

This policy scales safety and security measures with AI's growth.

The RSP is designed to be flexible, with regular updates, and it includes expanding teams in security and trust to uphold safety.

In brief:

  • The next 18 months are crucial for setting up proactive regulations as AI capabilities grow.

  • Anthropic’s RSP scales safety with AI's development and is regularly updated.

  • Strategic, clear regulation supports safety without holding back innovation and helps balance risk and growth.

Keeping it balanced

Anthropic believes clear and effective regulation is needed to reassure the public that AI companies stick to safety promises.

Regulations should encourage strong safety practices without adding unnecessary burdens.

They recommend regulations that are simple, focused, and adaptable as technology changes.

In the US, they suggest federal laws could be the best solution, though states might need to step in if federal action is delayed.

Globally, they propose that regulations should allow for standardisation and mutual recognition, which would make it easier for companies to meet safety rules across different countries.

While Anthropic’s proposals cover major risks, they acknowledge that some immediate issues, like deepfakes, are being handled by others.

They believe initial compliance can be managed through well-designed safety steps, which would protect national and private interests.

The goal is to ensure safety while letting technology grow responsibly.

Anthropic’s shots are fired.

AI DEEPFAKES

Thousands of people gathered in Dublin, expecting a Halloween parade. There was just one problem - it didn’t actually exist.

The parade, supposedly organised by Galway arts group Macnas, was announced by the website My Spirit Halloween and shared online, but it turned out to be completely fake.

This AI-generated news site, hosted in Pakistan, spread the false event through SEO, reaching various media outlets and social platforms.

Dublin's O’Connell Street was crowded with people in costumes before they realised there was no parade.

The Gardaí, Ireland’s police force, had to step in and ask people to leave for safety.

The large crowd also caused disruptions to the city’s Luas tram service, stopping the Red and Green lines for 30 minutes.

Here’s what you should know:

  • Thousands were misled by AI-generated news about a non-existent Halloween parade.

  • The Gardaí had to disperse the crowd, and tram services were disrupted.

  • The incident shows how easily online misinformation can spread, even if not meant to harm.

Dressed up for nothing

The My Spirit Halloween post said the parade would start at 7 pm on 31 October but did not mention that it was AI-generated or fake.

TikTok users boosted the spread of the false news, leading to a large gathering within hours.

While some found the situation amusing, it showed how quickly misinformation can spread and impact real life.

Although there is no sign of bad intent, this event raises concerns about the risks of AI-generated news and its potential misuse.

I guess the real parade was the friends we made along the way.

“Is Disney's tech move the future of entertainment or just another trend?”

Definitely the future. 72%

Just another trend. 28%

Your Views:

“AI could work in terms of optimizing workflow or maybe be incorporated into merchandising efforts. In terms of animation and writing, especially with the writer strikes, it's a big no. So if Disney can strike this balance, we can definitely see something worthwhile come from it.” - readingnook

“It's going to put a lot of actors/voice actors/animators/camera men/wardrobe women/carpenters/stuntmen/non-CGI special effects people/makeup artists out of work, but a reduced payroll & cheaper/ faster completion of product releases will please executives and shareholders” - reller
