DeepMind’s new lab changes the game

Google DeepMind is setting up its first automated science lab in the UK, part of a new deal with the government to expand how the country uses AI in research and public services.

The lab, planned for 2026, will use AI to help develop new materials for things like superconductors, solar panels and semiconductors.

UK scientists will also get priority access to DeepMind’s tools.

The company says AI is now advanced enough to speed up real-world scientific discovery, not just computer simulations.

DeepMind will work more closely with the AI Security Institute (AISI), giving researchers access to its models so they can study how AI systems make decisions, how they affect users, and what AI adoption could mean for the economy.

In return, the government will look at how Google’s Gemini model could support teaching England’s curriculum, and DeepMind will help update public services with its technical expertise.

In brief:

  • DeepMind will open a UK lab in 2026 focused on using AI to discover new materials.

  • The partnership includes access to DeepMind models and testing Gemini for use in schools.

  • Some researchers warn the UK needs stronger independent regulation around AI partnerships.

Are we going back to school?

The goal is to use AI to make services more efficient and support areas like cleaner, cheaper energy.

The UK has also been signing deals with other AI companies, including Anthropic, Cohere and OpenAI, to bring more investment and technology into the country.

But some experts say the UK still lacks strong independent oversight and may be relying too heavily on major tech firms.
