😮 MAJOR COMPANIES SLAM EU REGULATIONS
Remember a couple of weeks ago when the EU passed a draft law on regulating AI? And everyone nodded and agreed it was the right thing to do?
It turns out big businesses aren’t so happy. Over 150 executives from major companies have signed an open letter slamming the regulations and demanding the EU rethink them. Doh!
They are arguing that the regulation will stifle competition and is ineffective. over 150 executives from companies like Renault, Heineken, Airbus, and Siemens slammed the AI Act for its potential to “jeopardise Europe’s competitiveness and technological sovereignty.”
They think the rules go too far and will leave Europe behind when it comes to AI tech. Their major concern is the apparent targeting of generative AI. Any potential AI model must be registered in the EU, undergo risk assessments and reveal the content used to train them.
They argue this will lead to a huge amount of cost just to remain compliant, hampering efforts and dissuading AI businesses from setting up shop in the EU.

🇬🇧 OPENAI TO OPEN LONDON OFFICE
OpenAI (you know, the ChatGPT people) have announced they’ve opened a new office in London. It is only the company’s second office after its San Francisco headquarters.
“We are thrilled to extend our research and development footprint into London, a city globally renowned for its rich culture and exceptional talent pool,” said Diane Yoon, OpenAI’s VP of People.
The new office is a bit of a boon for London and the UK in particular - on a day when companies fought back against EU regulation, the UK has scored a post-Brexit win by being more open to AI business.
The UK is trying to position itself as an AI superpower, it remains to be seen if that will pan out, given the other issues we Brits are facing at the moment!
