Claude's in class, and not just to lurk

CLAUDE

Anthropic has launched Claude for Education, a new version of its AI chatbot designed specifically for universities. It’s a direct response to OpenAI’s ChatGPT Edu.

The tool is aimed at students, staff, and faculty.

One standout feature is Learning Mode, which encourages critical thinking by asking follow-up questions, breaking down key ideas, and offering templates for essays, outlines, and study guides, rather than just giving answers.

Claude can also help with admin tasks. University staff can use it to track enrolment trends or automate replies to common student queries.

So far, it’s already live at institutions like the London School of Economics, Northeastern University, and Champlain College.

Here’s what to keep in mind:

  • Learning Mode encourages critical thinking with prompts, breakdowns, and templates.

  • Claude supports both academic tasks and admin workflows.

  • Partnerships and full-campus deals are helping Anthropic expand across universities.

Stats don’t lie, students already use AI

To support rollouts, Anthropic is partnering with Canvas (by Instructure) and Internet2.

It’s also launching student ambassador and AI builder programmes, aiming to tap into the growing number of students already using generative AI, 54% each week, according to a 2024 survey.

With this move, Anthropic is looking to grow its presence in higher education while offering tools that could help students and staff alike.

We’re one group project away from letting Claude do the whole thing.
