Ever heard of The Pirahã language? It’s truly one of a kind. Spoken exclusively by ~300 people in a small tribe in the Amazon, it's missing things we usually take for granted, like fixed words for colours and numbers, making it one of the least complex languages still in use.

TODAY:

  • Chips: AMD brings the heat

  • Self-driving cars: Still a NAY for many people.

  • Around the web: TikTok Notes launches in Australia and Canada, featuring unique headline capabilities.

THE CHIP WARS

AMD is stepping up its game in the "AI PC" market with new chips designed for AI-enhanced business laptops and desktops.

These chips, set to be featured in HP and Lenovo devices from the second quarter of 2024, mark AMD's push into this lucrative sector.

The Ryzen PRO 8040 Series is aimed at business laptops and mobile workstations, whereas the Ryzen PRO 8000 Series caters to desktop users.

As consumer interest grows in AI-capable systems, AMD hopes to cash in with chips of their own to compete with other “AI PCs”

Get ready to ditch the Cloud

These AI PCs are equipped to handle complex language models and applications directly on the device, removing the need for cloud dependency.

This demand is fueled by the rapid progress in Gen AI technology, requiring robust semiconductors capable of managing these advanced tasks.

Here’s what’s up:

  • AMD's new AI-focused chips for business PCs will be available in 2024.

  • AI PCs can operate AI applications locally, improving performance and security.

  • AMD is competing with major companies like Intel and Nvidia in the evolving AI PC market.

AMD is up against strong competitors like Intel and Nvidia, with the latter leading in graphics processing units.

Both companies are also upgrading their AI PC capabilities, with Nvidia launching the "GeForce RTX SUPER" GPUs and Intel expecting to ship around 40 million AI PCs in 2024.

This is the Hunger Games of AI processors.

SELF-DRIVING CARS

Autonomous vehicles (AVs) are becoming more common, especially in California, Arizona, and Texas.

Even though these vehicles are advanced, they still cause problems like blocking emergency services, running red lights, or being involved in accidents.

These issues are rare compared to how often AVs operate safely, but they do impact how people feel about them.

Understandable trust issues

Public opinion has been becoming more negative towards AVs because of how these incidents are shown in the media.

To tackle this issue, the Autonomous Vehicle Industry Association (AVIA) has put forward the "TRUST Principles".

This plan aims to improve public trust by making their operations more open and engaging with communities better.

Things to keep in mind:

  • Sometimes, autonomous vehicles face problems that people notice, affecting their image.

  • The AV industry is working hard to gain public trust back with initiatives like the "TRUST Principles".

  • Talking more with the community and explaining how AV technology works are key to making people more accepting and trusting of autonomous vehicles.

AVIA plans to increase community talks, educate people about AVs, and start a group with law enforcement and emergency responders to better handle emergencies involving AVs.

These efforts should help people understand and trust AVs more.

However, there are still hurdles, particularly with confusion around brands like Tesla, which people often think are the same as fully autonomous vehicles even though they aren’t.

This mix-up makes public distrust worse, something AVIA and its members must carefully manage.

Would a self-driving car also have road rage? Just wondering.
