Google has introduced GenChess, a free online chess game that lets you design your own chess pieces using AI.
Launched alongside Google’s sponsorship of the 2024 World Chess Championships in Singapore, it brings a creative twist to the classic game.
With GenChess, you can customise your chess set by describing the style you want.
From “ice cream” pieces to “space soldiers,” the AI brings your ideas to life.
Once your set is ready, the AI creates an opponent’s set to match your theme.
How it works:
Go to the GenChess website to start.
Choose a "classic" or "creative" chess set.
Enter a prompt describing your design idea (e.g., "ice cream" or "cyberpunk ninjas") and let the AI generate your pieces.
Regenerate the designs if needed, or generate an opponent’s set to match.
Set the difficulty and timer, then click 'Play chess' to begin.
The AI behind GenChess is powered by Google’s Imagen 3 generator, part of the Google Gemini suite released in October.
Imagen 3 is known for creating stunning visuals, from realistic landscapes to claymation-style designs.
This technology ensures that every chess set is visually unique and creative.
The 2024 World Chess Championships are happening in Singapore from 25 November to 13 December.
Champion Ding Liren faces 18-year-old challenger Gukesh Dommaraju.
While they’ll use standard chess sets, GenChess shows how AI can add a fun, creative element to the game.
