OPENAI

OpenAI has partnered with Condé Nast, the publisher of Vogue, The New Yorker, and GQ, to let ChatGPT and SearchGPT feature content from these well-known magazines.

This multi-year deal is part of OpenAI’s plan to secure content from big media outlets, which is important for training its AI models.

However, not all media companies are on board — some, like The New York Times and the Chicago Tribune, have resisted and even taken legal action to protect their content.

Brad Lightcap, OpenAI’s COO, stressed the need for accuracy and integrity as AI becomes more involved in news delivery.

Condé Nast’s CEO, Roger Lynch, sees this partnership as a way to cover some revenue and continue investing in journalism.

Key takeaways:

  • OpenAI’s deal with Condé Nast lets ChatGPT and SearchGPT feature content from top magazines.

  • Some media companies, like The New York Times, are pushing back against AI’s use of their content.

  • AI’s growing role in search engines is causing concern for news organisations that rely on search traffic.

AI on the runway

Recently, OpenAI launched SearchGPT, an AI-powered search engine, and is working with news industry partners to improve.

Other partners include Time Magazine, the Financial Times and the Associated Press.

As AI tools become more common in search engines, companies like Google are also moving quickly to add these technologies.

Despite this, Google remains the market leader, controlling over 90% of the global search engine market.

The shift to AI-generated search results, which offer conversational answers instead of just links, has raised concerns among news organisations that depend on search traffic.

Last year, the BBC took steps to stop its content from being used by OpenAI and others without permission.

The BBC also said it would explore how GenAI could bring more value to its audience and society.

YOUTUBE

YouTube has come up with a new AI assistant designed to assist users in recovering accounts compromised by hackers.

This “troubleshooting tool” accessible through the YouTube Help Center, walks creators through the process of securing their Google Logins and reversing any unauthorised changes to their channels.

Currently, the AI assistant is only available in English and limited to a select group of creators, though Google intends to expand its availability to all YouTube creators in the future.

Here’s what’s happening:

  • The AI assistant is initially limited to a select group.

  • It guides users through account recovery, but direct human support is still lacking.

  • Smaller creators may struggle to get timely assistance from YouTube.

When in doubt, ask a bot

Early impressions suggest that the tool operates as a standard support chatbot with no unexpected AI behaviours and some safety measures in place.

However, it doesn’t address the longstanding issue of YouTube’s limited direct support, particularly for smaller creators who often find themselves dealing with automated responses when there’s an issue.

Adding an AI-powered chatbot might not satisfy those who were hoping for a more human touch from YouTube, especially when even prominent creators like Linus Tech Tips have experienced significant delays in resolving account hacking issues.
