ChatGPT grew ears

OpenAI’s first consumer device could be a portable smart speaker powered by ChatGPT, according to Bloomberg.

The device reportedly will not have a screen. Instead, it may use a camera and sensors to understand its surroundings.

Users could ask questions, play media, control smart home devices and reply to messages.

It may also include a rechargeable battery and moving mechanical parts designed to make interactions feel more natural.

Bloomberg says it could use GPT-Live, OpenAI’s latest voice model.

In brief

  • The device may use cameras and sensors instead of a screen.

  • It could handle questions, messages, media and smart home controls.

The speaker is reportedly planned for 2027 and could be one of around five devices OpenAI is developing with former Apple designer Jony Ive.

The report follows Apple’s lawsuit accusing OpenAI of using stolen hardware secrets.

OpenAI said it was not aware of evidence supporting the claims.

OpenAI has not confirmed the speaker. It has also teased a separate Codex Micro gadget, which was scheduled to launch yesterday, 15 July.
