OPENAI
ChatGPT goes classified
OpenAI has signed a deal with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to make its AI products available to the U.S. government for both classified and unclassified work.
The deal comes after OpenAI’s recent agreement with the Pentagon, which lets the military use its AI models in classified systems.
It also gives OpenAI a bigger role inside AWS’s government cloud network, where Anthropic already has a strong presence through Amazon Bedrock.
In brief:
OpenAI is making its AI products available to U.S. government customers through AWS.
The deal gives OpenAI a stronger place in secure government cloud systems.
OpenAI says it will keep control over model access and security conditions.
In deep now
As part of the partnership, AWS will offer OpenAI’s products to public-sector customers, including in secure government cloud systems such as AWS GovCloud and AWS Classified Regions.
OpenAI said it will still decide which models are available and will remain involved in security rules, deployment terms, and any extra protections needed for sensitive cases.
The partnership could help OpenAI reach more government agencies and may also boost its wider business, since government contracts are often seen as a sign that a company is trusted and reliable.
