ChatGPT and Grok are reporting for duty
The Pentagon is rolling out its own versions of ChatGPT and Grok, giving around 3 million civilian and military staff access to AI tools built for defence work.
ChatGPT Mil and Grok for Government are now available through GenAI.mil, the Department of Defence’s secure AI platform.
It launched last year with Google Gemini and lets staff use major AI models without sending sensitive data through normal consumer services.
The platform is already popular, with more than 1.7 million users so far.
ChatGPT Mil will support things like chat, files, projects and custom GPTs, mainly for routine unclassified work such as admin, logistics, planning and policy.

Grok for Government is being pitched for a wider range of military work, including research, supply chains and collaboration.
One major model missing is Anthropic’s Claude.
The Pentagon and Anthropic have been in a dispute over limits on how the military can use its AI tools, and Anthropic is now challenging its supply-chain risk label in court.
The move is part of a wider Pentagon AI push, with the department also working with AWS, Microsoft, Nvidia and Reflection AI.
