Memes about tricking AI bots by telling them to “ignore all previous instructions” often show how easily AI chatbots can be manipulated.
Typically, these tricks lead to unexpected and humorous responses.
Now, OpenAI’s research team has developed a solution called “instruction hierarchy” to tackle this issue. There will be no more tricking chatbots, it seems.
This technique prioritises the developer’s original instructions over any new commands the user might inject.
The first model to employ this technique is the newly launched GPT-4o Mini.
Olivier Godement from OpenAI explained that this new safety method ensures the model strictly follows the developer’s initial instructions, effectively preventing the “ignore all previous instructions” trick.
How they’ve tackled the issue:
Instruction Hierarchy gives priority to the developers’s instructions over user commands.
The first model to use this technique is GPT-4o Mini, enhancing its security.
Future guardrails will be essential for the safety of automated digital agents.
This safety measure is crucial as OpenAI aims to create fully automated digital agents.
Without such protections, these agents could be manipulated into performing harmful actions, such as leaking private emails.
In summary, GPT-4o Mini has been designed to be significantly harder to misuse, addressing ongoing safety concerns and improving trust in AI technology.

Google’s interest in this growing market may lead to a collaboration with Ray-Ban to create smart glasses with Gemini, giving us a whole range of AI smart glasses to choose from.
Meta, buoyed by the success of its Ray-Ban smart glasses with the Meta AI assistant, is considering acquiring a 5% stake in Ray-Ban’s parent company, EssilorLuxoticca.
Talks are advanced, but Google might try to intervene.
The breakdown:
Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses are thriving with Meta considering a 5% stake in EssilorLuxottica.
Google is interested in entering the smart glasses with Gemini-powered glasses.
A Meta and EssilorLuxottica deal is likely to proceed, despite Google’s interest.
Google, keen to enter the smart glasses arena, aims to offer smart assistants and AR navigation in a sleek package.
It’s also collaborating with Samsung on an XR headset due this year.
Google previously partnered with Ray-Ban to create Google Glass (remember that?), which could make them the ideal partner.
Google's recent approaches suggest it’s still in the game, seeking an alternative partner for its smart glasses vision.
Will this just be Google Glass 2.0?
