Bluesky gains users while Threads adds more features
SOCIAL MEDIA
Bluesky, a social platform trying to rival X, is growing fast and now has over 20 million users.
In response, Meta’s Threads is rolling out new features to improve its platform and hold onto its larger audience, as the war to try and supplant X continues.
Threads has now introduced AI-powered summaries in the U.S.
These summaries give quick overviews of trending discussions in the “Trending Now” section.
Instagram head Adam Mosseri announced the feature, which is similar to X’s chatbot Grok, used for summaries of trends in its Explore section.
Threads is also testing new tools, including expanded trending topics, searches by date range, and finding posts by specific accounts.
Mosseri called these changes “long-overdue improvement to Search and Trending Now on Threads.”
In brief:
Threads now provide quick overviews of trending discussions in the U.S.
New features include date-range searches and finding posts by specific accounts.
Users can create personalised feeds, putting Threads in direct competition with Bluesky’s customisation options.
The underdog era
Threads is also making changes based on user feedback, including showing more posts from accounts you follow.
The new custom feeds allow users to focus on topics or profiles they care about, competing with Bluesky’s ability to let users build their own algorithms.
While Bluesky’s user base is growing quickly, Threads is still much larger, with over 275 million monthly active users.
Data from Similarweb show Bluesky is catching up in daily active users, and if its growth continues, it could become a serious competitor.
