✏️ BIG AI ART COPYRIGHT RULING!

The US copyright office has ruled that an award-winning piece of art cannot be copyrighted, as it was made in Midjourney.

The ruling could have serious connotations for AI artists, who may find that they cannot profit from their works.

The decision found that “Théâtre d’Opéra Spatial”, an AI-generated image that won first place at the 2022 Colorado State Fair annual art competition, was not eligible because copyright protection “excludes works produced by non-humans”.

The artist, Jason Allen, claimed his use of Midjourney allowed him to claim authorship of the image because he “entered a series of prompts, adjusted the scene, selected portions to focus on, and dictated the tone of the image”.

But the board ruled that “if all of a work’s ‘traditional elements of authorship’ were produced by a machine, the work lacks human authorship, and the Office will not register it”.

Judges are increasingly citing the idea that copyright requires something to be human-made.

So far, these rulings seem to have only taken place in the US. Will other countries decide differently?

🤖 DON’T REGULATE AI, SAYS COINBASE BOSS

Many of the leading tech bosses have been calling for a unified approach to AI regulation. But one of them is saying “f*ck that!” instead.

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong has taken a different view, and is saying AI should not be regulated AT ALL.

Comparing AI to the internet, Armstrong believes a lack of regulation was key to achieving a “golden age” of innovation, and worries that could be stifled for AI, if it is regulated.

Maybe Brian has a point? Will others come forward to support this view I wonder?
