Joe Biden has unleashed a bombshell in the AI arms race, by blocking all of Nvidia’s chip sales to the Middle East, to counter the chance that China gains access to them.

Nvidia has been ordered to seek permission when exporting chips to certain countries in the region, which are already banned from being sold to China and Russia. This will come as a major blow after both Saudi Arabia and the UAE both placed huge orders for Nvidia’s $10,000-a-pop AI powerhouse chip.

China has been acquiring the chips on the black market, and could be looking to simply buy them from the Middle Eastern countries, with which they have much warmer relations.

Chinese researchers are believed to be heavily represented at the Saudi research institution King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, leading to concerns about how China could access the tech. The US government has previously flagged the UAE as a potential “transhipment point” used by Russia to evade sanctions.

Saudi Arabia signed a strategic partnership plan with China last year that included a pledge to cooperate closely on artificial intelligence.

This all makes the move seem reasonable, but will surely have huge implications in the AI arms race!

That’s the experience that some of the world’s leading drone pilots had after AI won 15/25 races against them.

Three expert drone racers were beaten by an algorithm that learned to fly a drone around a 3D race course at breakneck speeds without crashing.

Developed by researchers at the University of Zurich, the Swift AI clocked the fastest lap on the course, with drones reaching speeds of 50mph!

Swift used reinforcement learning for the drones to learn the optimal route around the course. The power of deep learning quickly mastered the track and gave them the edge over our puny human brains.
